Buddy Matthews had a big match at AEW Grand Slam: Australia, but he ended up suffering an ankle injury before the match started and unsurprisingly, Matthews was spotted on crutches following the event.

Rhea Ripley took to her Instagram and uploaded several photos of herself alongside Buddy Matthews following Grand Slam, where they were celebrating their honeymoon. In one of the photos, Buddy Matthews was spotted in crutches, confirming that he did get injured during the event. However, Ripley made it clear that the ankle injury wasn’t going to keep them down, as she said, “Ain’t no Roly-Poly ankles gonna keep us down! Let the honeymoon commence!”

This comes after Buddy Matthews vented his frustrations following AEW Grand Slam Australia, where he tweeted about the issues caused by what he claimed was a 16×16 wrestling ring instead of the 18×18 ring that QT Marshall claimed AEW used for the event, which he believes led to serious problems during the event.

Matthews stated two things went wrong. Firstly, he hurt his ankle when he stepped into the ring because the padding had holes. Second, he claimed that if the ring was bigger, Kazuchika Okada wouldn’t have been able to reach the ropes, and Matthews could have won the match and become champion.

“So thoughts after #AEWGrandSlamAustralia – If it wasn’t a 16×16 SH*T wrestling ring!” he wrote. “1: Wouldn’t have destroyed my ankle on my entrance due to holes in the padding. 2: Okada wouldn’t have been able to put his foot on the rope & I’d be champion. Sh*t happens…”

Matthews would eventually delete the tweet as well, which further angered fans. Since the Australian star hurt his ankle, fans are wondering how long he will be out of action and if AEW will address the controversy surrounding the small ring. This is because AEW ended up borrowing a ring for Grand Slam: Australia and it clearly stuck out like a sore thumb.

The incident also made people question AEW’s quality control for shows in other countries and whether they will make changes in the future. Therefore, AEW will have to ensure they never make such a mistake again in the future, as this entire ordeal has hurt their reputation.

Do you think AEW should take responsibility for Buddy Matthews’ injury? Should they standardize ring sizes across all events to prevent similar issues? Drop your thoughts in the comments below and let us know what you think!
