Bryan Danielson’s jump to AEW in 2021 sent shockwaves through the wrestling world—but what fans didn’t know until now is just how close he came to staying with WWE.
In a new interview with Nick Stav, Danielson opened up about a phone call with Vince McMahon that took place mere days before his AEW debut, revealing the level of respect and integrity behind the final decision.
The former WWE Champion explained that he had agreed to join AEW but hadn’t signed the contract yet. Despite making his decision in early August, WWE wasn’t ready to let him go without a fight. Vince personally reached out with a counteroffer, hoping to convince Danielson to stay.
“I called Vince in early August and let him know, ‘Okay, I made my decision and I’m going to do this.’”
Vince wasn’t done. Even after Bryan gave his word to AEW, McMahon reached out again—this time trying to change his mind.
“He called me one time in the meantime and said like, ‘Hey, what if we offered you this instead?’”
Bryan didn’t waver. In what he described as a conversation built on mutual respect, he reminded Vince of the values he stands by.
“Sir, I’ve already agreed to this thing. And if I was somebody to go back on this—like, I feel like you have a decent amount of respect for me—would you still respect me if I did that?”
“One of the things that you respect about me is that I honor my word.”
Vince’s reply said it all.
“Damn it, you’re right.”
Bryan shared that the moment solidified his decision, adding that he appreciated the honesty of the exchange. According to him, it wasn’t about money or spotlight—it was about honoring his commitment.
This all took place just five days before AEW All Out, where Danielson and Adam Cole both debuted to thunderous reactions. For Bryan, the last-minute nature of it all was just part of the business—but walking away from WWE wasn’t easy. It was simply the right call at the right time.
