Brian Cage is dealing with more than just pain — he’s now facing a frustrating setback in his road to recovery following a brutal third knee surgery earlier this year.

After undergoing the procedure back in November, Cage was hopeful for a return to the ring — possibly by AEW Full Gear. But in a new interview with Nick Teodoro, the Machine admitted things haven’t gone to plan.

“We’ve actually had a bit of a hiccup — mostly because we’ve been doing so much. I was doing these single-leg squat deals, and we’re guessing that’s what aggravated it.”

Cage explained that the issue might be bursitis or irritation caused by an implant rubbing against his femur — but either way, it’s slowed down his rehab and introduced a new kind of pain that wasn’t there before.

“I’m not really sure if it’s a bursitis-type situation, or if there’s some kind of irritation from the implant in my knee — the one on my femur — rubbing against it. I don’t know exactly what it is, but it kind of sucks, because it’s a different type of pain now — and it’s been hindering some of the continued progress we could be making.”

That progress has come at a steep price, too — the pain has been nearly unbearable. He admitted that, besides a few top-tier injuries, it’s one of the worst levels of pain he’s ever felt.

“It’s been some of the most painful rehab I’ve ever done. I told my wife — besides a few top-tier injuries I’ve had — this is right up there in terms of pain level, especially when it comes to bending my knee and getting my range of motion back.”

Cage also made it clear he doesn’t want anyone expecting a return just yet. He had a tentative comeback date in mind — AEW Full Gear — but now he’s playing it close to the chest.

“I also told them I didn’t want to know when I was coming back. So I don’t have a perfect, exact date. I know when I think I’ll come back. I know when I want to come back. But I’m going to keep that under wraps — that way nobody has any idea, and I’ll come back when I come back.”

Cage has never been one to stay down for long, but this latest setback proves even machines break down — and healing isn’t always linear. Fans will have to wait and see when the powerhouse finally returns to AEW programming, as it might still be a long time.
