Brian Cage isn’t stepping into a wrestling ring anytime soon—but it’s not because he doesn’t want to. The AEW powerhouse recently revealed he’s undergone surgeries on both knees after trying to power through chronic pain for more than a year and a half.
In a new interview with Wombreezy and The Magic Of Wrestling, Cage admitted that his right knee had been giving him trouble for roughly 18 months. The original plan was to finish out AEW All In Texas before finally addressing the issue.
“My right knee has been bothering me forever. We’re probably talking 18 months. I’ve been postponing it because any athlete, not just wrestlers, never want to take time off obviously. I just kept pushing through and through. I would jump wrong or land weird or take a step weird or slip and catch myself and my knee would just blow up.”
But in March, a tear in his left knee forced him to rethink everything. With the damage already done, Cage decided to take care of both knees while he had the chance—even if the rehab process has been brutal.
“Unfortunately, I tore this knee at the end of March… I knew I could come back pretty quick but I was like, I don’t want to come back and then still have the right knee be an issue—l go, you know what, it’s going to suck, but let’s just do it now. I went and had the right one done, which has not been fun at all.”
Trying to heal both knees simultaneously has taken its toll. Cage admitted his left knee has suffered some regression due to overcompensating during recovery.
“The left one’s kind of gone a little backwards in some regards because it went from doing about 20% to you know, 80% or so of the work when it wasn’t ready for it. So, it’s been a bit of a struggle but we’re getting through.”
As for when fans can expect to see him back in the ring? Don’t expect a countdown. Cage is keeping his return date completely under wraps.
“I am not giving anyone any dates or times. I know when I want to be back, I know when I think I’ll be back, but I don’t want anybody to have any sort of expectations… I want it to be a complete surprise.”
Brian Cage’s last match went down on March 20 in a no contest against Chris Masters at OnlyWrestlers Association. With his recovery still underway, fans will have to stay patient for that next suplex from The Machine.
