Brian Cage honed his skills in various promotions before joining AEW. The Machine is a highly skilled in-ring performer, particularly for someone of his size. He was a staple of AEW television before making his way to Tony Khan’s ROH. Now it appears Cage addressed why the core AEW fanbase hates him.
Brian Cage would then be gone from AEW television for a very long time until reappearing during a Ring of Honor pay-per-view last year. Brian Cage’s contract status was a very interesting point to consider for a while.
Thankfully, Cage would end up signing a long-term contract with AEW and ROH. The Machine isn’t necessarily the most popular talent in AEW despite being in the company for three years now.
While speaking on Busted Open Radio, The Machine was asked if he feels he’s been underappreciated in AEW. Cage admitted that he did feel he was underappreciated in AEW in ways and added that the core AEW fanbase hates on him due to his WWE attributes.
“In certain regards, yes. With our core audience at AEW, I feel they almost hate on me because of all those attributes [size, charisma, mic work, athleticism], I almost feel like that screams WWE. In some regards, it’s almost like anti-me, ‘He doesn’t belong here. He’s too jacked, he does this,’ which are all positives in my book, but it feels like ‘I’m on the wrong team.’ I can toot my own horn and say, they can’t be me, so they’d rather attach on to a Darby Allin or someone they can live more viciously through as opposed to someone like me.”
Brian Cage is set to partner up with Big Bill on Friday’s AEW Rampage in the Blind Eliminator Tag Team Tournament against Trent Beretta & Matt Sydal. We’ll have to see who will come out on top in the match.
