Jade Cargill was busted open pretty badly during the September 26 episode of WWE SmackDown after Nia Jax threw her towards the steel steps. While many fans have blamed Jax for the injury, it seems that Booker T has a different opinion on the matter.
While speaking on the Hall of Fame podcast, Booker T talked about Jade Cargill getting busted open on SmackDown after Nia Jax threw her into the steel steps. He said it was a mistake that comes from inexperience, noting that in his 20-plus years as a wrestler he never hit his face on the steps.
While being shoved into them can happen, he explained that protecting yourself is important. Comparing it to boxing, he stated the importance of always defending yourself in the ring since anything can happen when you put your body in someone else’s hands.
Looking at both sides, Booker T admitted he doesn’t know exactly what was communicated in the moment, but believes Jade Cargill needed to do a much better job of protecting herself.
“Well, I can tell you this. I can only call that a mistake from someone who hasn’t been in that position too many times before. The reason I say that is because I was an active wrestler for over 20 years, and I never hit my face on the stairs. That’s not something that ever happened. Maybe getting shoved into the stairs is one thing, but protecting yourself is something different.
For me, it’s like boxing—you’ve got to protect yourself at all times. You never know what’s going to happen in the ring, especially when you’re giving your body to someone else. You’ve got to protect yourself. “I feel like, looking at both sides—you know, Nia’s perspective, I don’t know what was said or how that went down—but I do know Jade has to protect herself a whole lot better than that.”
Jade Cargill has since made it clear she is definitely okay despite the gruesome nature of her injury, even showing off the nasty cut she received because of the spot.
The controversy surrounding Jade Cargill’s SmackDown injury shows how fast fans can blame wrestlers, especially if they already have a certain reputation. Booker T reminded everyone that safety in the ring is a shared job; wrestlers must protect themselves while also trusting their opponent. Regardless, we hope such an incident never happens again for everyone’s sake.
