Bobby Fish may have been released from WWE in 2021, but he’s not slamming the door shut on a comeback anytime soon.
During an interview with Inside the Ring, the former NXT Tag Team Champion opened up about whether a WWE return is still on the table—and who he’d want to face if he stepped back into their ring. When asked if the door was officially closed, Fish made it clear that he’s not the one shutting anything down.
“Okay, so are you asking if they are closed off to it, or if I’m closed off? I can’t speak for them. I’m not closed off to it. I enjoyed my time there. They are who they are, and at the end of the day, I’m still a pro wrestler. So yeah.”
Fish admitted that his original dream opponent would have been Samoa Joe, but since Joe is no longer in WWE, the fantasy matchup gets complicated. He even joked about not being able to name Fit Finlay despite wanting to.
“My dream opponent there… well, it would’ve been Samoa Joe, but he’s not there anymore. So… this is tough because it sounds like I’d have to go back to AEW then. I can’t say Fit, because nobody wants to see someone his age and my age in a match like that. But I would love to work Fit Finlay — that’d be great.”
When it came to choosing a current WWE name, however, Fish didn’t hesitate—AJ Styles was the clear pick. He praised their chemistry from their Ring of Honor match and compared it to the same connection he had with Bryan Danielson in both Evolve and AEW.
“As far as who’s there now, I have had a match with him before, but how the f** are you going to go wrong with AJ Styles? We had great chemistry in the match we had in Ring of Honor. It’s the same feeling I had wrestling Bryan Danielson in AEW — we wrestled years before in Evolve and had great chemistry, and in AEW I was happy to see we still had it. So with AJ, I’d think it would be the same. If I got to… yeah, that’s it. Dream opponent in WWE right now: AJ Styles.”*
While Bobby Fish isn’t headed back to WWE just yet, he’s keeping the door open—and the idea of him stepping in during AJ Styles’ retirement run next year could be a massive moment for old‑school fans. Now it’s up to WWE to decide if they want to pick up the phone.
