Bischoff on Wrestling Recap – His 1999 Firing From WCW, Biggest Financial Bust in WCW, Thoughts on GFW Drama, More!

Bischoff discusses his 1999 firing from WCW.

The date was September 10th, 1999. Bischoff had a great talk with his friend Bill Bush the night before and Bischoff told him he was considering quitting his position at WCW. Bush was a trusted friend and told Bischoff to go home, take a few days to reconsider and then make a decision, so Bischoff did just that. Unfortunately, Bush took this information and used it to position himself as the frontrunner for Bischoff’s job.

Bischoff was called into the office and was told to ‘go home’. They didn’t fire him officially because he still had 2 and a half years left on his contract. He knew that even though they were still paying him and they didn’t officially tell him he was fired, he was basically pushed out of his position. He was basically told to go home and take a nap.

Bischoff says that Dave Meltzer’s reporting at that time was so far from the truth. For example, Meltzer speculated that some of Bischoff’s bad business deals – such as the KISS deal – was the reason he was being let go. Bischoff says that not surprisingly, Meltzer was ‘full of shi*’.

At this point, Kevin Sullivan was still involved in the booking somewhat, but he was never a major player. He says that Sullivan was someone who could always sneak his way into semi-prominent positions based solely on the fact that there were so many people trying to work in the wrestling business that didn’t have a clue what they were doing. Dusty Rhodes had mostly stepped away from his booking responsibilities by this time.
