It looks like WWE made a major pivot when it comes to Becky Lynch’s SummerSlam opponent—and Bayley may have just been left out in the cold.
After retaining the WWE Women’s Intercontinental Championship in a triple threat at Evolution against Bayley and Lyra Valkyria, Lynch was expected to move into a one-on-one feud heading into SummerSlam at MetLife Stadium on August 2 and 3.
On the July 15 episode of Raw, Bayley and Valkyria faced off in a two-out-of-three falls match to decide who would get the title shot. Valkyria ended up winning the hard-fought battle, but according to Wrestling Observer Newsletter, that wasn’t the original direction.
The report revealed: “An internal proposed card for SummerSlam listed Lynch vs Bayley as the match that was planned.”
That internal rundown was reportedly created “nearly three weeks ago,” meaning that Bayley was the frontrunner until a change of plans happened somewhere between then and this past Monday’s Raw.
As of now, it’s unclear what’s next for Bayley. If WWE doesn’t find a spot for her, it would mark the second time this year she’s missed one of the company’s biggest stages—WrestleMania being the first.
With SummerSlam fast approaching, fans will now get Lynch vs. Valkyria instead. But Bayley’s absence from both marquee events is sure to have people asking questions behind the scenes.
