WrestleMania 41’s main event plans are still in flux, and it looks like there’s a major backstage divide over whether CM Punk should be added to the WWE Championship match.

According to WrestleVotes, there are some within WWE pushing for a triple threat match between Cody Rhodes, John Cena, and CM Punk, instead of the originally rumored Rhodes vs. Cena and the separate Punk vs. Seth Rollins vs. Roman Reigns match.

“We know that some in WWE would prefer a three-way match between Cody Rhodes, John Cena, and CM Punk as opposed to the rumored singles match between Rhodes and Cena and the rumored triple threat match between Punk, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns,” the report stated.

But not everyone is on board. In fact, it seems like the most powerful decision-makers aren’t interested in shaking things up.

“According to a source, those feelings are not shared by everyone, with the expectation of this match being that it will not happen,” WrestleVotes added. “We can confirm the Mania card is still being completed in totality. However, the high-level matches are likely set, so TC, the meat and potatoes of this little nugget, is that there are people that want Rhodes vs. Cena vs. Punk. However, it doesn’t seem like everybody wants it, and those people who don’t want it look to be holding the power.”

With WrestleMania 41 shaping up to be one of the most stacked cards in years, it remains to be seen whether Punk’s main event status will change or if WWE is set on keeping things the way they are.

WrestleMania 41 is already shaping up to be a must-watch spectacle, but the backstage battle over CM Punk’s role proves that not everyone is on the same page. With powerful figures in WWE seemingly set on keeping things as planned, it’s looking less likely that Punk gets thrown into the WWE Championship mix. But in wrestling, anything can happen—and with Punk involved, drama is never far behind.
