Austin Theory’s absence from WWE television in 2025 wasn’t just creative downtime—it came down to a serious injury he had been battling behind the scenes for far longer than fans realized.
While speaking to The Mark Hoke Show, Theory opened up about the real reason he was gone for several months, explaining that he had been wrestling through a painful hernia without most people knowing what he was dealing with physically.
Theory explained that despite staying active and competing, the injury was something he constantly had to manage on his own after matches, even when the situation became uncomfortable and difficult to handle.
“Well, I think for me it was a you know, everything happens for a reason, but I was actually wrestling with a hernia for a very long time and as gross as it is, man, I was having to pop it back in after certain matches and yeah, just stuff people, you know, they don't know about. They don't know when somebody goes to the ring, you know, what the damage is.”
Eventually, the situation reached a breaking point that forced him to take action. After continuing to compete despite the injury, Theory said there came a night when the hernia would no longer go back in after a match, sending him straight to the emergency room and leaving his future uncertain at the time.
“But, uh I was in a good spot. So, you know, and even when it was hitting a low for me, I was doing everything that I could to just stay and keep the, you know, the wheels turning on the car. And it reached a point had a match on main event and it would not go back in. So, that night I went to the emergency room and it blew my mind because I was like, ‘Wow, I just had my gear on and I went out there and I wrestled and now I'm in the ER and now it's like, well, where does this go now?’ Because now I'm out of the picture. My contract was actually coming up. So, a lot of things were hitting me personally.”
The situation didn’t just affect him physically—it also forced him to rethink his mindset and how he approached his career. Being sidelined during a critical period made him evaluate where he stood and how he wanted to move forward once he was able to return.
“And that's kind of one of those things like that's a low point in your life where you get really rocked. And to me, those points are where you really you either stay down or you pick yourself up and you become a version of yourself that's always been in you, but it takes you to that next level. And it helped me reframe my mindset and everything. And coming back, I just knew like this is my value and this is what I need to be doing.”
Theory has since returned to WWE action and remains active, but his comments offer a rare look at the physical toll that comes with staying in the ring, especially when injuries aren’t publicly known at the time.
