Andrade El Idolo has become known for his confident in-ring personality, and one of the most talked-about parts of his current AEW character is the moment when he stops mid-match to take selfies with fans at ringside. During a recent interview with SHAK Wrestling ahead of AEW Revolution, Andrade explained how the idea first came to him and why he felt it was necessary to stand out in such a stacked roster.
The former WWE and AEW star said the idea was born out of the intense competition among performers in AEW. With so many talented wrestlers trying to deliver the best match every night, Andrade realized he needed something unique to separate himself from the rest of the locker room.
“So how? Because you know, in AEW almost, I say, 90–95% the wrestlers are amazing. So all wrestlers want to say, ‘I want the best, I want the best, I want to do the best, I want to show.’ So always compete, and in the matches too. Like I have a match with Kenny, maybe MJF have a match with Bandido. He want to show this match is better than this match. So I’m thinking I need to do something different.”
That thought process led Andrade to lean into his confident persona and play up the reaction he often gets from female fans in the audience. Instead of ignoring it, he decided to make it part of his act.
“So is when the idea come. I said, ‘Yeah, I’m Latino and I look good.’ And so I know I hear many ladies want a picture with me, but little heel and arrogant or something. So I like, I need to share this thing like, ‘Okay, you want a picture with this handsome guy? Okay, let’s go take a picture.’”
The moment has quickly become one of the more entertaining parts of Andrade’s matches, especially when the crowd realizes what he’s about to do. The spot often gets a loud reaction from fans at ringside who jump at the chance to be part of the show. Andrade said the response has confirmed that the idea was worth trying, and it’s now something he plans to keep building into his character moving forward.
“And people like it, and the ladies like it. And I think it’s still growing this character. I’m happy.”
Andrade continues to evolve his persona as he pushes toward bigger opportunities in AEW, and his creative touches inside the ring show how important it can be for wrestlers to find ways to stand out in a competitive environment.
