The future of Alberto Del Rio in AAA just got a lot murkier—and El Hijo del Vikingo is looking more like the centerpiece of WWE’s new partnership with the Mexican promotion.
Fightful Select reports that WWE’s influence may already be affecting creative direction, with sources pointing out the curious timing of Del Rio’s title defense against El Hijo del Vikingo—just one week before the NXT x AAA: Worlds Collide event on June 7.
“Even if they keep Del Rio in the company, that belt is almost surely coming off of him,” one source told Fightful.
While there’s no confirmation yet that Del Rio is set for Worlds Collide, Vikingo is already being positioned as a major player in the WWE–AAA partnership. His involvement in the announcement of the crossover event was a strong hint that WWE sees him as part of their long-term strategy.
The match between Vikingo and Del Rio could be more than just a title bout—it might be a passing of the torch, orchestrated as WWE retools AAA to fit its own model.
Del Rio’s polarizing reputation and legal past have already sparked debate among fans. With WWE now driving creative direction, it’s unclear how long he’ll stay involved—if at all.
