AJ Styles wants one more match in TNA before he calls it a career in 2026—but he’s not holding his breath. The Phenomenal One just made it clear that WWE probably won’t allow it, and he’s coming to terms with that reality.
While speaking on the No Contest Wrestling podcast, Styles responded to Mike Santana’s open challenge for a match in a TNA ring, possibly for the World Championship. And while Styles admitted he’d love to do it, he doesn’t believe WWE will ever let that happen.
“I was hoping this match would happen, I really was, but I realized it probably never could with WWE allowing it. And the reason is pretty simple: the moment I open that door for main roster talent, everyone else is going to want to do it too.”
He understands Santana’s passion and the desire to wrestle someone like him before it’s too late.
“Honestly, the way he talks reminds me of how I feel about some of the legends I’ve wrestled. I just want the chance to learn from them, to share the ring with them, and to be able to say I had that opportunity. I really get where he’s coming from.”
Even though WWE and TNA currently have a working relationship, Styles pointed out that only NXT talent has been involved so far—not main roster stars.
“Going back was an incredible moment, but I just don’t see that match happening right now. Even with the partnership NXT seems to have… it’s NXT that has the partnership, not the main roster talent.”
Styles also joked that if anyone on the main roster should be allowed to break that rule, it’s him—but he knows that’s wishful thinking.
“And listen, I wish I could make it happen. Part of me thinks I should be the only guy who gets to do it, but I know that’s selfish. So we’ll see what happens. I’m not sure what the future holds, but I guess we’ll find out together.”
With retirement looming and fans begging for one last TNA appearance, AJ Styles is stuck between what he wants and what WWE will actually allow. Whether or not that dream match happens is still a mystery.
Do you think WWE should make an exception and let AJ Styles wrestle one last match in TNA? Who should he face? Sound off in the comments.
