AEW just added another championship to its growing collection—but not everyone’s convinced it’s a good idea.
During Busted Open After Dark, Tommy Dreamer reacted live to the announcement of the AEW National Championship, which was revealed during the latest broadcast and quickly became the subject of heated debate among fans and insiders alike.
Dreamer didn’t waste time getting to the core issue: Does AEW really need another title? While he acknowledged the belt was officially teased online before being unveiled, Dreamer’s focus immediately shifted to the impact of title inflation on storytelling and talent value.
“At first also I thought the NWA had the national title. They do, but this is going to be AEW’s version of the national title and it’s, you know, on TBS.”
Then came the hard truth.
“Do you think adding another title helps or hurts? Really it’s just about the credibility of the title… If everybody has a title, then what am I really fighting for?”
Dreamer pointed out that wrestling promotions used to have a clear structure—world title, midcard title, tag titles—and those distinctions made every division feel important. But AEW’s title picture is already stacked: World, TNT, Tag, Trios, Undisputed Continental, and now this new National Championship. The more belts there are, Dreamer argued, the less each one means unless properly booked.
“It’s the person that makes the title, not the title that makes the person. If this belt’s going to mean something, they better get the right guy.”
For Dreamer, adding another title isn’t automatically a win—it’s a creative gamble. And unless AEW is prepared to make it matter with long-term stories and strong champions, it could just add more confusion to an already crowded landscape.
As the company moves forward with its new championship, AEW has to decide if this title will truly elevate someone—or if it’s just there to check another box.
