Things just got messy for AEW’s Trios Title scene.

PAC suffered an injury during his singles match against Swerve Strickland on last week’s AEW Dynamite, and now it’s putting the Death Riders’ title defense in jeopardy. The trio was originally scheduled to defend the AEW World Trios Championships against The Opps, but with PAC sidelined, the plans are getting complicated fast.

Enter Jon Moxley—sort of. While the expectation was that Moxley would slide in to team with Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta under the Freebird/Wolfpac rule, Fightful Select reports that AEW isn’t officially recognizing Moxley as a Trios Champion right now. The company made it clear that “Moxley is not currently recognized as a Trios Champion.”

However, that could change. AEW has announced that if Moxley teams with Claudio and Yuta and wins against Samoa Joe, Katsuyori Shibata, and HOOK at Dynamite: Spring BreakThru, he will then be acknowledged as a Trios Champion.

To make things even more confusing, Tony Schiavone casually stated on AEW Collision that Moxley was being treated as an interim champion for the sake of competition. So yes—he’s sort of a champ, but also not really.

It’s a chaotic situation, but one thing’s clear: Moxley’s got a shot to make it official this week.

Do you think Moxley should automatically be recognized as a Trios Champ, or does AEW need to draw a line? Sound off in the comments and let us know how you’d book this situation.
