AEW made a deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to put their shows on more platforms. Dynamite is now shown on TBS and the Max streaming app, while AEW Collision airs on TNT and Max at the same time. However, it appears that quite a few AEW wrestlers didn’t know about the move to Max at all.
While speaking on the Going Ringside podcast, Mariah May revealed that AEW talent were not informed about the company’s move to the Max streaming platform. She explained that when they were all heading to the ring, they had no idea what was about to be announced.
Everyone was confused, wondering what was going on. May admitted that, like many others, she had no prior knowledge of the announcement and nobody around her was aware either. She mentioned that she was with the makeup girls when the news was finally revealed, and their reaction was excitement, realizing they were going to Max.
“Yeah, it was really exciting because we all kind of went to the ring and we didn’t know what was being announced and we were like, ‘What’s happening? You know, what’s going on?’ And then they… so you didn’t know? No, well, I didn’t know. I mean, generally, a lot of the wrestlers did not know. I don’t know, I’m out of the loop, I do my own thing, but I had no idea. Nobody around me knew. And then, um, I remember I went with the makeup girls and they announced it, and we were like, ‘We’re going to Max.'”
AEW was also happy with the changes they made to the production for the recent episodes of Dynamite. Their deal with Warner Bros. Discovery and the Max streaming platform shows that AEW is focused on growing and adapting. By using both streaming and traditional TV, AEW can reach new audiences while still keeping their loyal fans and this approach seems to be exactly what Tony Khan had in mind from the start.
What do you think about AEW’s surprise move to the Max streaming platform? Do you think this strategy will help them grow their audience, or should they have communicated the news better to their talent? Share your thoughts in the comments below—we’d love to hear from you!
