Kenny Omega’s showdown with Kyle Fletcher is officially off—for now. AEW has hit pause on the planned singles match, and it all comes down to concerns over Omega’s physical condition.
According to Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the company decided to hold off on the match after determining that Omega isn’t at full strength. There were internal doubts about whether he could deliver at the expected level, especially against a fast-paced talent like Fletcher.
“There is a reason that right now they aren’t going to do the match, as basically in a normal situation that would have been the match booked but Omega’s physical situation is not 100 percent and the feeling was it was better right now not to put Omega in the situation of the kind of a match he’d be expected to do with Fletcher.”
Fletcher, a key player in the Don Callis Family, has been a thorn in Omega’s side for weeks, so the match was a natural next step. But AEW isn’t forcing it. Instead, they pivoted—and fast.
Omega’s new direction kicked off with the return of Andrade on the sixth-anniversary edition of AEW Dynamite. Andrade laid Omega out and immediately aligned himself with the Callis faction, launching a new feud that allows AEW to keep Omega active without overextending him physically.
Omega worked a trios match earlier in the night before the post-match ambush. While he’s back in action, the former AEW World Champion is still managing lingering issues, including diverticulitis, which took him out of the ring for a large chunk of 2024.
This creative shift protects Omega while still advancing his feud with the Don Callis Family—and gives Andrade a huge spotlight after his surprise return.
Is AEW smart to hold off on Omega vs. Fletcher for now? Or should they have pulled the trigger while the feud was hot? Let us know your take in the comments.
