Paul Wight’s a legend in the business, but he is also known for playing Captain Insano in The Waterboy. Over the years, he has brought the character back on AEW television, and it appears that AEW might be bringing the character back in the future.
All Elite Wrestling recently filed a new trademark for “Captain Insano” on January 24 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The filing covers merchandise like clothing and action figures, as well as wrestling-related entertainment, including live and televised appearances. This more or less made it clear that the company plans on using the character again in the future.
“G & S: Bandanas; Hats; Headwear; Pants; Shirts; Shorts; Socks; Sweatshirts; T-shirts; Undergarments; Clothing jackets; Tank tops; Clothing for wear in wrestling games”, “G & S: Action figures; Toy action figures; Cases for action figures; Play sets for action figures; Toy action figures and accessories therefor; Toy wrestling rings”, as well as “G & S: Entertainment in the nature of wrestling contests; Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibits and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer; Entertainment services, namely, live appearances by a professional wrestler; Entertainment services, namely, televised appearances by a professional wrestler.”
Paul Wight made a cameo as Captain Insano during The Acclaimed’s music video in 2022 and he would follow it up with another appearance alongside MJF and Adam Cole as part of a skit back in 2023. To top it all off, he revived his character for the Country Music Awards last year, making an unexpected appearance that fans appreciated.
To make matters even more interesting, Wight previously hinted at potentially bringing Captain Insano to AEW Grand Slam: Australia, saying, “I’d love to bring him back for something special.” Regardless, with the trademark secured, it’s clear that AEW has plans for Captain Insano. Whether this means more comedic skits, new merchandise, or a bigger role in AEW storylines, it looks like the beloved character will continue to be featured in the promotion’s future.
