Kiana James hasn’t been seen in a WWE ring since June 2024, but new backstage developments are pointing to her return being right around the corner. After undergoing knee surgery and spending over a year away from action, James appears to be cleared—or very close to it—and WWE seems to already have plans lined up.
On the Fightful Select Q&A Show, Sean Ross Sapp gave a behind-the-scenes update on her status and movements within WWE.
“Update on Kiana James — I had heard over a month ago she was either cleared or nearing clearance. She was backstage at the Lexington SmackDown show that I attended, and she was also backstage at Evolution. It would appear to me that they at least have something planned for her since they didn’t include her in that battle royal.”
Sapp’s comments suggest WWE is holding James back from smaller returns like a one-off battle royal appearance because they might have bigger plans in mind for her. That decision, combined with her backstage presence, points to a creative direction already being mapped out.
Kiana James made her main roster debut during the 2024 WWE Draft and instantly caught attention on Monday Night RAW. But after just a few months, injury derailed her run and fans were left wondering if she’d return anytime soon. Initially, she was expected to be out for six months—but that timetable nearly doubled, raising concerns about her recovery.
Despite the extended absence, James has been working hard behind the scenes. She’s regularly posted gym updates and rehab progress, reassuring fans that she’s pushing for a strong return.
It’s not a matter of “if” anymore—it’s “when.” And if WWE is playing the long game with Kiana James, her comeback might be timed for maximum impact.
