WWE’s takeover of AAA has already led to quite a few changes over the past few months, but it’s clearly not going to end yet. This is because AAA’s longstanding business model could end under WWE’s ownership.

According to Ernesto Ocampo of Superluchas, following WWE’s acquisition of AAA, the company may soon move away from one of its longstanding business models.

Ocampa explained that AAA has already undergone major changes and is no longer the traveling promotion it was years ago. For a long time, the company has instead focused on producing a limited number of shows for television while selling additional events and talent appearances to independent promoters. That system is still in place today, but Ocampo noted it may eventually come to an end.

For now independent promoters in Mexico continue to benefit from booking top AAA talent, which has been drawing significant attention, especially with the arrival of major new names.

“Yes, now we’ve seen quite a few changes and in the end it seems to be working for now. It’s no longer an itinerant company like we saw years ago. But in reality, it had stopped being that for a long time when they focused more on doing a limited number of shows for television and selling the rest of the shows and wrestlers to independent promoters, who for now continue with that business model. It’s possible that will end, that eventually they won’t sell anymore, but for now independent promoters should take advantage of having basically big wrestlers at shows in Mexico, and that’s drawing a lot of attention right now, specifically with the wrestlers that have arrived.”

WWE purchasing AAA is already changing lucha libre, and one big change could be if AAA stops letting independent promoters book their wrestlers. That would shake up the whole wrestling scene in Mexico. For now, promoters and fans are still enjoying seeing big stars at local shows, but that opportunity might not last much longer.
