WWE’s official acquisition of the Mexican lucha libre promotion AAA is seen as a move that could significantly change the landscape of the business. Fans have been wondering what the ultimate goal for AAA following the acquisition is, and now Konnan has revealed what that goal is.
While speaking on the Keepin’ It 100 podcast, Disco Inferno asked Konnan about the ultimate goal for AAA and whether it is to make it the most superior product in Mexico. Inferno wondered if the plan is to use a model similar to WWE’s, where shows are held in the biggest cities and arenas, with slightly higher ticket prices.
“Ultimate goal here is to make AAA a far superior product—the most superior product in Mexico, right? Where you can use the WWE model that they’re using now, where you can basically just run shows in the biggest cities, in the biggest arenas, and charge a little bit more. And just like—is that the plan now?”
Konnan confirmed that it’s definitely the current plan and ultimate goal. He added that they are going to be shown the WWE-style system. Essentially, they will be trained in a way similar to how WWE operates, gaining an understanding of their whole system.
“Right, that’s the plan. They’re also going to show everybody their system. They’re going to show us, you know. So basically, we’ll be trained almost like if we went to WWE and worked there, we could know their whole system. You know what I’m saying?”
Konnan has also shut down concerns that WWE will water down AAA the same way they did to ECW in the past. Regardless, AAA and WWE are firing on all cylinders right now and their upcoming event, NXT x AAA: Worlds Collide, is set for June 7 at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles and it’s expected to be a solid event.
With AAA set to adopt WWE’s model, it is more obvious than ever that the promotion is preparing for an exciting new chapter in Mexican wrestling. Therefore, we’ll have to wait and see whether AAA will truly benefit in the long run.
