Rey Mysterio has been a constant babyface in pro wrestling for over three decades—and now we finally know why. In a recent interview with WrestleZone, the WWE Hall of Famer explained why he’s never made a full heel turn, and according to him, it’s just not in his nature.

Even when the creative door was open for a darker persona, Rey said it would take a lot for him to go there. In fact, he shared a personal story that perfectly explains why turning heel has always felt out of reach.

“They would really have to like push me to the edge. I mean even my wife says like, ‘I never see you get mad at anyone but me.’ Like, why do you not fight? You don’t fight with anyone, but when you want to fight, you fight with me. So I mean it would be very hard for me to get pushed.”

Rey pointed to his time in WCW as part of the Filthy Animals as the closest he ever came to leaning heel—but even then, he says it was more fun than anything serious.

“I think the only time that I’ve been closest to becoming a heel—or I guess we were just having fun ’cause that’s how we were—is Filthy Animals. That has been the closest.”

At the end of the day, Rey says it’s simply not who he is.

“Overall, I just—my personality, my demeanor—is very laid back. So I think it would be very hard.”

With his laid-back nature and natural fan connection, it’s no surprise WWE has never pulled the trigger on a Rey Mysterio heel run. While his son Dominik may be running wild as one of WWE’s top villains, Rey’s staying loyal to the light—and clearly, that’s exactly how he wants it.
