Mercedes Mone is living proof that betting on yourself can pay off in a major way. The former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion walked out of the company in May 2022 with Naomi, and now, more than two years later, she’s reflecting on that choice with no regrets—and plenty to show for it.

In the latest issue of Mone Mag, the current AEW TBS Champion and global wrestling force opened up about leaving WWE behind, embracing her identity outside the company, and becoming the highest-paid woman in the business. Mone made her AEW debut in March 2024 and has since stacked up gold in AEW, NJPW, and RevPro.

“Growing up, WWE was everything to me. I never imagined my life without it. But over time, I’ve come to realize that it’s not WWE I can’t live without; it’s pro wrestling itself.”

Mercedes credited one pivotal moment—presumably her walkout in May 2022—as the spark that lit the fire for her transformation. Since then, she’s gained a new level of clarity, power, and success.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t feel grateful for that decision. It pushed me to new heights, matured me into a strong-willed CEO, and empowered me to take control of my life and future. I’m especially thankful for all my fans who have stood by me throughout this journey.”

For those wondering what truly drove her, Mone dropped a piece of wisdom that clearly guided her actions:

“I want to remind you all: when something doesn’t feel right and you start receiving signs from the universe, listen. I’ve been working on sharing my story, and trust me, when the time comes, it’s going to be one for the books.”

She also didn’t hold back when addressing a message once passed to her by someone in WWE management.

“I remember a higher-up once telling me, ‘The grass isn’t greener on the other side.’ Well, let me tell you—every seed I’ve planted over the years is growing and flourishing like never before. Becoming the highest-paid women’s wrestler is a beautiful flower that has blossomed, and I couldn’t be prouder.”

With her sights set on Toni Storm and the AEW Women’s World Title at All In, Mercedes Mone isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

Mone’s story is still being written—but one thing’s clear: she’s the author of her own future now. Do you think Mercedes made the right call leaving WWE for AEW? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
