John Cena walked into SmackDown with all the confidence in the world—but he left laid out and booked for another fight he didn’t ask for.

During the June 13, 2025 episode of WWE SmackDown, Cena opened the show with a promo crowning himself as every face on wrestling’s Mount Rushmore. He broke down his WrestleMania 41 win, mocked the fans, and took credit for giving Ron Killings a spot in the main event scene. He also made it clear that CM Punk was in his crosshairs—but Punk had a message of his own.

In the final hour, CM Punk stepped up and confronted Cena. He told Cena their roles were starting to blur, pointing out how Cena now sounds like him and he’s sounding like a tamer version of his past self. Punk called Cena out for putting himself on a pedestal and reminded him that he was the one who walked away with the title years ago. Then he dropped a line that hit hard—saying he’s always seen through Cena—and walked off.

That’s when things got physical. Ron Killings attacked Cena from behind, catching him completely off-guard, and locked him in Cena’s own submission move—the STFU. Security rushed to the ring to break the hold as the crowd exploded. Cena was left shaken, and the message from Killings was loud and clear.

In an update after the commercial break, cameras cut to backstage where Ron Killings approached SmackDown GM Nick Aldis and demanded a match against Cena next week on SmackDown. Aldis didn’t hesitate. The match was made official.
