Jey Uso lost the WWE World Heavyweight Title to GUNTHER on the June 9th edition of Monday Night Raw, something that fans didn’t expect at all. While some people were happy about his loss, Rikishi wasn’t one of them, as he called for WWE writers to get fired after his son’s loss.
While speaking on the Off the Top podcast, Rikishi talked about Jey Uso losing the WWE World Heavyweight Title and he didn’t mince words. He said some fans were happy that Jey’s title reign ended, while others were upset it only lasted 51 days.
Rikishi reminded everyone that Jey Uso has worked hard for over 16 years in WWE. As part of The Usos, he and his brother were top sellers in merchandise. Now even as a singles wrestler, Jey is still making a lot of money for the company.
Rikishi said that’s what should matter, what’s good for business. He believes Jey Uso gave his all to reach the top but wasn’t given the right support. The writers didn’t give Jey strong opponents or good storylines, and that hurt his title run.
“I’m talking about what y’all put out there. Some of y’all are happy that Jey’s reign came to an end. And some of y’all out here making noise about how long he held the belt—what was it, 51 days? 51 days as champion.
Hold on, let me back up a second. Are we talking about a kid who’s been grinding for 16-plus years? A kid who, along with his brother, had merch sales going through the roof as a tag team—and now he breaks off as a singles competitor. If you can tell me anyone else selling more merchandise than ‘Yeet’ right now, go ahead—tell me. Because this kid is bringing in revenue.
What’s that phrase y’all like to throw around? ‘What’s good for business.’ Yeah, well, Jey is what’s good for business. This is someone who poured his heart and soul—just like everyone else on the roster—into getting that main event spot. And when he finally gets there, you know what I feel?
I feel the people writing for this kid didn’t do him justice. You didn’t give him the right talent to feud with, the right stories to tell. You didn’t give this champion a fair shot. So yeah, 51 days—what a joke.”
Rikishi was angry that WWE’s creative team couldn’t come up with good ideas for Jey Uso, saying they should be fired if they can’t do their jobs. Rikishi believes Jey was the right person to hold the title and should’ve been given a longer chance.
GUNTHER won the World Heavyweight Title and while Rikishi said he doesn’t have any problem with the Ring General or anyone else, he really disagrees with the decision. He wished them luck but made it clear that he feels his son was treated unfairly.
“I say fire the people writing for him. If you can’t come up with something basic to help push the guy you chose to make champion, then get out the way. You had him in that position—and then what? Suddenly your brains go blank? Can’t think of an angle?
If you can’t do your job, best endeavors—move on. Put someone else in that position. Because the longer you keep that belt on Jey, the more money you make. That’s just facts.
Merch sales? Through the roof. That’s what matters. If you’re not making money for the company, what are you even doing?
And now you pass the title on to GUNTHER—for whatever reason. I’ve got no beef with GUNTHER. I’ve got no issue with anyone on the roster. And if I did, I’d say it to their face—that’s the kind of man I am.
But hey—good luck. If that’s your choice, good luck. But let me get back to my thoughts about my son and his world title run. I don’t think it was right. I don’t think it was fair. 51 days? That’s it? A short run with the Intercontinental Title, and now this? What is it with y’all when it comes to my boy?”
Rikishi questioned if WWE would’ve done the same thing to big names like Randy Orton or John Cena. Rikishi also pointed out how loud the crowd was for Jey Uso at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas, where everyone was chanting “Yeet.”
To him, the Bloodline has given everything to WWE for over 75 years. That’s why he feels so hurt. In Rikishi’s eyes, Jey Uso deserved more respect it just didn’t feel right to him at all.
“Would you have done that to Randy Orton? Would you have thrown the belt on Cena for a few weeks and then pulled it back? Let’s talk about it. Last time I checked, at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas, he had the entire arena chanting ‘Yeet! Yeet! Yeet! Yeet!’—your mother*******yeet!
So come on. Somebody tell me what it is. The Bloodline has given everything—past, present, and future. 75+ years to this industry. And this is how we’re treated? We’ve never been the problem. We’ve always been the source. And this? This ain’t right. It just ain’t right.”
We have previously reported that the real reason Jey Uso dropped the title to GUNTHER was so that GUNTHER would be champion in his feud with Goldberg, which would lead to a match at Saturday Night’s Main Event next month. Regardless, Rikishi simply feels WWE dropped the ball on his son’s World Title reign and many fans will ultimately agree with what he had to say.
What do you think—was Jey Uso’s 51-day reign too short, or was it the right call to have GUNTHER take the title? Sound off in the comments.
