Triple H tried to play it cool after R-Truth’s shocking return at Money in the Bank, brushing it off with, “It’s all part of the show, man.” But behind the scenes, the decision to bring back Ron Killings wasn’t planned—it was a fast pivot sparked by fan backlash.

During the June 8, 2025 episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed WWE tore up their original plans to make room for R-Truth’s return as a surprise moment, even if it meant sacrificing the actual story they were building around Cody Rhodes and John Cena.

“He’s back because of the fans. Okay, that’s the deal. He’s back because of the fans. They saw the outcry, and then they wanted to make him— they basically, you know, tore apart what they were going to do tonight when they brought him back and wanted to do the big moment. You know, they’re into moments. And as a moment, it was a big moment. You know, it was a surprise. It got everyone talking.”

Meltzer confirmed the company changed course after seeing the viral “We Want Truth” movement dominate WWE programming all week. The original ending was built around Cody Rhodes pinning John Cena clean to set up their singles feud. But the real story became R-Truth’s reemergence—and WWE made that call very late in the game.

“It’s not like it was a work… it was a late decision. They wanted that moment. And for them, that was more important than the original story.”

The result? WWE got their viral shock, but the intended takeaway got completely buried.

“The focus of this show was originally Cody Rhodes pins John Cena… Instead, the focus is they brought back R-Truth. Did they work everyone? That became the story. Cody pinning Cena? Nobody’s talking about it.”

It’s clear that WWE didn’t expect the backlash from Truth’s exit to catch fire the way it did. But once it did, they reversed course fast—and now the company is scrambling to reshape the narrative, even as talent and fans push back on the idea this was “always the plan.”

R-Truth’s return may have stolen the spotlight, but it also raised questions about WWE’s priorities: are they chasing social moments, or telling long-term stories?
