Drew McIntyre pulled no punches when it came to his feud with CM Punk—but even he admits there was one line he nearly crossed.
During his recent appearance on Guerilla Position: Beyond the Ring, McIntyre revealed he was moments away from dropping Vince McMahon’s name during a promo, referencing Punk’s controversial firing on his wedding day.
As tensions between McIntyre and Punk reached boiling point in early 2024, McIntyre said he was constantly walking the line between personal and professional.
“It crossed my mind. The conversation in my head of — do I do it? Do I say the same person that fired you on your wedding day? Which did cross my mind. But again, somebody’s got to be the professional out there. And in Chicago, he’s technically the good guy, even though he’s clearly the bad guy and I’m saying the truth non-stop.”
McIntyre’s restraint, especially on live TV in Punk’s hometown, is a reminder of how real the tension between the two stars was. He even admitted the entire rivalry thrived on authenticity, not just storytelling.
“We kind of caught lightning in a bottle and people could feel that things were a little bit different with Punk and I. The feelings were real. And, you know, we are professionals, so we’re able to keep it together as much as we can. The result of a couple of people that are really good at their job who genuinely don’t like each other… was what you saw in 2024.”
In an era where promos often blur the line between character and reality, McIntyre nearly taking a real-life jab at Punk’s darkest professional moment shows just how close things got to boiling over.
