Mariah May hasn’t officially left AEW just yet, but her quiet removal from the roster page says plenty—and according to Dave Meltzer, the company has been expecting this for months.

During the May 30 edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer explained that AEW brass had long accepted May’s future was in WWE, even before her storyline with Toni Storm ended. While her contract is technically still active, the writing has been on the wall backstage for quite a while.

“Yeah, she’s gone. That was expected for months. Basically, when the Toni Storm feud wrapped up, that was pretty much the end of the road. They ended that story a little earlier than I would’ve done it — they had more legs there. But she was never staying long-term. The dream was always WWE,” Meltzer revealed.

He added that May joined AEW with WWE already in mind, and the company had no illusions about keeping her long-term. “She came into AEW already thinking WWE was the endgame,” Meltzer said.

As her contract nears its expiration, AEW is simply finishing out the clock. Meltzer made it clear there’s no drama behind the scenes, stating, “There’s no animosity here, this was all known internally. And the reality is, she used AEW the way a lot of people use the indies or NXT — as a launching pad.”

Mariah May’s AEW chapter isn’t officially closed—but the company already knows where she’s headed next.
