WrestleMania 41 Sunday was full of incredible entrances that have become a staple of the Showcase of the Immortals at this point, and that included Damian Priest’s epic entrance with Slayer’s Kerry King and now Priest has revealed how the entrance came together.
While speaking to Denise Salcedo, Damian Priest shared how his epic WrestleMania 41 entrance with Slayer’s Kerry King came together. He explained that initially, he was told the plan was to have Kerry King play him to the ring, and he didn’t believe it at first.
However, after a conversation with Blue Meanie who mentioned he saw Kerry King at a concert and that he was excited about the idea, Damian Priest took that as an opportunity to talk to Triple H. He casually mentioned that Kerry King would love to play him to the ring, and just left it at that.
“They said, ‘Yeah, King Slayer.’ And they’re going to play him to the ring. I was like, ‘No shot, all right guys, take it easy.’ And they’re like, ‘No, no, no, no.’ And then, funny enough, it was Blue Meanie that hit me up—this is probably over a month ago—that they saw him at a concert and he said, ‘Yeah, I talked to King,’ and he said he’d love to play it to the ring. I took that as an opportunity to go to Hunter and be like, ‘Hey man, so I was at Luminia,’ and he said, ‘King would love to play.’ I just wanted to put that on the table. Just insane, but then just left it at that.”
Later, Priest found out he would be hosting Slayer’s reunion tour, which was their first big tour in years. He was excited, but also nervous about being on stage. He worried about embarrassing himself and acting too much like a fan. When the opportunity became real, his nerves got even worse, more than before his match at WrestleMania.
Damian Priest said he loves the big entrances, the music, and the larger-than-life characters in wrestling. That’s what made him fall in love with the business. So getting to have a moment like this with Slayer and Kerry King was a dream come true, and he was happy it turned out so well.
“And then I hear that I’m going to host the Slayer reunion, you know, their first headlining tour, and they’re coming back together and performing a few shows, and I’m going to be the host of that show and the MC for the thing. And I’m like, ‘This is crazy work.’ I legit got nervous when they said that to me ’cause I was like, ‘Oh my god, what am I gonna say? I’m gonna embarrass myself on stage, I’m gonna be a little boy fan, you know.’ And then from that, it was like, ‘Hey, this might happen.’ And I was like, no shot. And then when they finally said it’s happening, I was like, oh my god, I got more nervous about that than the match.
Just ’cause, you know, that’s what I’ve been a fan of. I love the pageantry of what we do—the entrances, the music, the characters. That’s what I fell in love with in the business. It wasn’t just the wrestling. So the idea that this was happening, I was nervous ’cause I was like, ‘Please let it be really good.’ And I don’t know, I think it was pretty cool.”
Damian Priest duked it out with Drew McIntyre in a very brutal Sin City Street Fight at WrestleMania 41 Sunday and while he was unable to defeat The Scottish Warrior, Priest’s performance definitely helped him gain a lot of respect from fans and that truly mattered to Priest in the end.
