WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio is a big fan of pop culture and has often included his love for Marvel and DC Comics in his ring gear. However, it appears WWE received legal warnings over him wearing superhero-inspired gear.
While speaking to Adrian Hernandez, Rey Mysterio was asked about his different WrestleMania outfits, like his Joker, Captain America, and Daredevil looks. He was also asked if he worked with Marvel and how long it took to create his gear.
Mysterio said WWE told him to slow down at one point because his designs were getting too detailed. He explained that he was just using certain colors and small details, like stars and gloves, but always kept his own logo the same.
“Actually, WWE had to shut me down for a minute because I was getting too exaggerated. I was like, ‘It’s my logo, I’m just using their colors.’ You know, maybe a Captain America vibe, maybe a star here, the gloves. But I mean, I don’t change anything.”
Talking about his latest outfit, Mysterio said he has a cool idea that he hopes to use. He remembered his first superhero-inspired gear in AAA, where he dressed like Superman. Back then, he wore tights with trunks on top with the Superman logo changed to include a question mark. He also wore a small red cape, making it clear what he was going for.
“With this outfit I have now, I have a pretty dope idea that I want to put into work. I’m hoping I’ll be able to bust it out. But overall, it’s always been an inspiration. When I did the first one, I was in AAA. I did a Superman outfit, and back then, I used to wear tights with trunks over them. That’s just how it was. The logo on the trunks had the Superman symbol with a question mark, and I used the same colors. I even wore a little red cape, so people got what I was trying to do.”
Over the years, he expanded his designs to include Batman, Spider-Man, and other superhero themes, carrying that concept into WWE. However, the company eventually told him to scale back, as they had started receiving cease-and-desist letters
“Then it was Batman, then Spider-Man—I just carried that with me to WWE. Until they told me, ‘Hey, maybe you need to stop a little bit,’ because we were getting cease and desist letters.”
We will have to wait and see when The Master of the 619 will decide to bring out another superhero-inspired gear, especially as we approach WrestleMania 41. After all, Mysterio already made it clear he has a good idea for his next outfit.
