Rey Mysterio is a legendary figure in professional wrestling, with an impact that cannot be overstated. After dedicating over 30 years to the sport, the toll of time is becoming evident, and he has now shared his plans for retiring from in-ring competition.
While speaking to Adrian Hernandez, Rey Mysterio was asked if he wanted to announce his retirement, like Tim Duncan and John Cena, or if he would rather leave quietly when the time felt right.
Mysterio said he would like to make an announcement so that fans who have supported him from the beginning could have a chance to see him wrestle one last time. He wants to give back to those who have been loyal to him.
At first, he thought he would just retire without saying much, but now he realizes that decision is not easy. He knows his retirement is coming closer, so he is slowly preparing himself for it.
“No, I would love to make an announcement. I would love for the fans who have grown up watching me and supported my career from day one—because there are still many around—to have the chance to say, ‘Hey, this is his last time performing. I want to go see it.’
I want to give that opportunity to the fans who have been loyal from the beginning. Before, I thought I would just retire one day, but when you start thinking about it, it’s a hard thing to do. I know that time is a lot closer now than it was yesterday, so I have to mentally prepare myself.”
Watching John Cena’s final run has helped him understand what it feels like to step away. While Cena is moving into Hollywood, Mysterio has spent his whole life in wrestling. When he retires, he will need to think about what comes next and how to accept that his time in the ring is over.
“Right now, seeing Cena doing his last run, I’m watching him and trying to understand what that feels like. Obviously, he’s moving into Hollywood, and he’s got a great thing going. For me, I’ve always loved wrestling, and it’s the only thing I’ve ever done. So when I leave, I have to think about what’s next, how to transition, and how to be at peace with it.”
John Cena is set to retire in December this year and will never wrestle again. Now, fans are wondering if Rey Mysterio will have a similar farewell tour in the future. Only time will tell how he chooses to close out his legendary career.
