Shawn Michaels heads to the ring, set to oversee the signing of the Addendum to the contract for the upcoming Ladder Match at the Royal Rumble.
The camera cuts to the crowd, showing Ted DiBiase, Dory Funk Jr., and Hacksaw Jim Duggan in attendance.
In the ring, a ladder stands behind Shawn Michaels, who is ready to oversee the contract addendum signing. Shawn Michaels takes the mic, joking that he’s been sweating through his suit from all the dancing because he’s thrilled to be back in San Antonio. He reminds everyone that he was given one job—to walk out of the ring with the signatures of Kevin Owens and Cody Rhodes. He adds that since Nick Aldis couldn’t get it done, they sent in the closer to finish the job.
With that, Shawn introduces Kevin Owens as the “challenger.” Kevin Owens makes his way to the ring, proudly sporting a “Cody Sucks Eggs” shirt.
Shawn Michaels introduces the “champion” Cody Rhodes. Cody makes his entrance and climbs one of the ladders set up at ringside, taking a moment before stepping into the ring.
Now standing face-to-face with Kevin Owens in front of the contract table, both men refuse to sit when Shawn asks them to take their seats. Seeing this, Shawn allows them to remain standing.
Shawn acknowledges that they have battered and beaten each other for months. While the fans have enjoyed the chaos, he is here for one reason—to get their signatures on the contract. He stresses that this needs to happen and asks them to sign the contract. Cody signs first, wasting no time.
Kevin Owens refuses to sign until he gets something off his chest. He recalls that Cody said something last night that pissed him off—that Owens always takes the easy way out ten out of ten times. Owens argues that if that were true, he would have taken the easy way out in Berlin when Cody’s knee was injured. Instead, Cody was the one who took the easy way out. Kevin points out that when things got tough, Cody left.
Cody doesn’t entertain the debate. He tells Kevin that he isn’t here to talk about the past or justify his actions. He didn’t dress up for this moment, and Shawn Michaels didn’t come to San Antonio just to listen to Owens talk. Cody shifts his focus to the future, making it clear that he needs to start preparing for his opponent at WrestleMania. He urges Kevin to sign the contract and make it official.
Kevin Owens tells Cody that he’s not done worrying about him because, at the Royal Rumble, he will silence everyone who says he isn’t the rightful WWE Champion. He promises that once he wins the title, everything Cody got when he returned—the fanfare, the opportunities, the legacy—will belong to him. Owens says that’s what he has deserved for the last ten years. Shawn Michaels interjects, telling Owens that he sounds jealous.
Kevin doesn’t take kindly to that choice of words. He fires back at Shawn, calling it rich that he would side with Cody. When things got tough for you, you quit too. Owens says Shawn is the jealous one, envious of the fact that he has brought more pride and prestige to the WWE Championship than Shawn ever did.
Owens vows to give the fans a champion they can be proud of—one who won’t turn his back on them, one who won’t lose his smile. He looks Cody dead in the eyes and says, “You will lose your smile.” With that, Owens signs the contract. Shawn then tells both men that it’s time to surrender their title belts so they can be hung above the ring.
Owens hands over his title, and it’s secured to the hanging device. Cody follows, handing his belt to the referee. The two championships are raised into the rafters—despite the match taking place in Indianapolis.
Shawn reminds them that only one man will ascend that ladder and leave as the Undisputed WWE Champion before wishing them luck. As Shawn shakes Cody’s hand, Owens sucker-punches Cody. He follows up with a kick, setting up for a Package Piledriver—but Cody fights back. Before Owens can react, Shawn Michaels levels him with a Sweet Chin Music to end the segment.
Meanwhile, Jey Uso is seen bouncing in the back, ready for whatever comes next.
