Baron Corbin became the talk of the town recently after he called out AEW talent wanting to get their releases early in light of Rey Fenix’s current situation in AEW, as Tony Khan refuses to release Fenix despite public outcry. Baron Corbin got into several arguments on Twitter over his comments and now he has explained why he decided to engage in these online debates in the first place.
While speaking with Chris Van Vliet, Baron Corbin talked about why he argued with fans on Twitter about Rey Fenix’s AEW contract. He said he was stuck at an airport, bored, and just wanted to have some fun by stirring things up.
“I was starting some stuff on Twitter the other day because I was delayed at the airport or whatever. Sometimes, I just like to fire people up. If I’m going back and forth, I’m bored—I need something to do.”
Many fans accused him of begging for a job, but he made it clear that he doesn’t need one. Corbin emphasized that he enjoys spending time with his family, taking his daughter to school five days a week, and making up for time he missed while traveling for wrestling.
“People were like, ‘Oh, you’re begging for a job.’ I’m like, no, I don’t need a job, man. I’m home with my kids right now. I take my daughter to school five days a week, I get to play with my other daughter during the day—I’m making up for lost time from being gone.”
At first, it was just for fun, but things got bigger, and he got caught up in it. Now that he’s no longer under any restrictions, he feels free to say whatever he wants. He used to enjoy joking around and arguing on Twitter but had to stop for a while. Now, he doesn’t have to hold back anymore.
“I was bored, man! You get caught up sometimes. The problem is, it’s like a snowball rolling downhill because now you have to respond again. I got ramped up, too, because I don’t have any handcuffs now. If I want to say a potty word on Twitter, I can. I can be on the edge a little bit.
I kind of got caught up in that—it was funny. I used to destroy people on Twitter just for fun, but then I was like, ‘I’m a good guy now, I can’t do that.’ But now? I don’t have any rules. I can do this.”
The whole drama on Twitter started after Corbin said that when a wrestler signs a contract, they should honor it. He pointed out that if Tony Khan had stopped paying Fenix while he was injured or not working, people would have criticized that as well. He also emphasized that a wrestler can’t just switch companies after signing a deal.
“If you sign a contract you honor it,” Corbin wrote. “Would it have been okay if Tony didn’t pay him while he was hurt or out of action? The answer is no bc Tony signed the contract as well. You can’t switch teams after getting what you want and signing the contract.”
Regardless, he has put it all behind him as Corbin is now focused on becoming a big name in the independent scene following his WWE exit and that’s what fans feel matters to him the most, but it’s understandable why he couldn’t help but engage in a brief Twitter war.
