Monday Night RAW’s highly-anticipated Netflix debut on January 6 managed to surpass all expectations since it was truly the beginning of a new era in WWE. In fact, it has now been confirmed that the debut episode was specifically focused on new fans instead of continuing major storylines.

While speaking to The Sports Agent, Chelsea Green was asked about the storylines taking a backseat during the RAW Netflix debut. She explained that the focus was on introducing WWE to new viewers, especially with Netflix having 283 million subscribers worldwide.

The goal was to make sure viewers understood the basics of WWE before diving into the storylines. Starting with complex plotlines would be confusing for new people, just like jumping into the middle of a soap opera. Green said they wanted to first introduce the characters and the kind of show WWE is before adding back the storylines in the following weeks.

“Absolutely. Honestly, it’s just that episode. Cause you have to imagine, we have been hyping this up on Netflix for so long. They have 283 million subscribers in 190 countries. We need to bring it back to the basics so that when they tune in, they understand what’s going on and then we’ll start adding back those storylines in the following weeks and get back to the Road to WrestleMania and the feuds we have going. It would be really difficult if on that first night of Netflix with all those 283 million subscribers tuning in, to be like, “Forget it, we’re not not gonna introduce you to WWE.

We’re just gonna go on the deep end.” Because that’s like jumping to the middle of a soap opera, the middle of a season of a soap opera. So it’s like, let’s go back and introduce the characters and what we do and what kind of variety show we are.”

WWE RAW’s Netflix debut was touted as the largest arena gate in WWE history and the episode drew 2.6 million viewers in the USA and an impressive 4.9 million viewers globally, so it was clear that WWE’s strategy worked out in a big way.

WWE RAW’s debut on Netflix on January 6th was a major event, attracting new viewers and showing off the epic rivalries that make wrestling so exciting. With stars like CM Punk, Seth Rollins, and others taking the spotlight, it’s clear that WWE is maximizing its talent to make the most of this new era.
