During the Triple H era of WWE, there has been a big shift in focus toward prioritizing quality over quantity. This change is particularly evident in the reduction of matches on Premium Live Event cards. As a result, WWE has opted to stick with five-match cards and the reason for that has been revealed.
There is an ongoing debate about the length of Premium Live Event cards in WWE. The company has shifted away from the long events of the past, opting for shorter cards. While this approach has its advantages, some fans argue that the reduced number of matches ultimately harms many WWE Superstars.
According to Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select, WWE has several reasons for sticking with five matches for Premium Live Events. One key benefit is the significant reduction in costs, as fewer Superstars mean lower travel expenses. Additionally, wrestlers not booked for these events enjoy an extra day off, which is a rarity considering WWE’s busy weekend house shows. However, TKO is planning to scale back on WWE live events in the future.
Even with the five-match format leading to fewer Superstars traveling, some still attend the events even if they are not competing. WWE has incorporated backstage segments to include more talent on the show, sometimes featuring legends, as seen at WWE Bad Blood 2024. The company has also begun producing packets for younger wrestlers, providing information about the legends in attendance, encouraging them to ask questions or seek advice.
Sami Zayn has expressed mixed feelings about shorter cards for Premium Live Events. Nevertheless, it is very evident that WWE will not be doing away with five-match cards for Premium Live Events anytime soon, so fans will simply have to accept that fact now.
