Fuego Del Sol’s AEW career took a significant hit once Cody Rhodes left the company in early 2022 and returned to WWE. By June 2023, Fuego Del Sol had decided to depart from AEW, and start his free agency in July of that year.

In a recent interview with Fightful, Fuego Del Sol discussed the impact of Rhodes’ departure on his career, focusing on their time together as Too Fast Too Fuego, where Rhodes played Fuego II. He described their run as “a fun little thing,” noting that it only lasted four matches but drew a lot of attention and took the “world by storm”.

“What a fun little thing while it lasted. It was only four matches, but it took the world by storm.

“It was really just a way for Fuego II to stay in ring shape. He felt like he was cutting too many promos on TV.

Fuego explained that the partnership served as a way for Rhodes to maintain his ring shape while reducing his promo appearances on television. For Fuego Del Sol, it provided a guarantee of being featured on TV every week, which changed after Cody’s departure.

“It was great for me because it guaranteed me to be at TV every week.

“When Cody leaves, I don’t have that guarantee to be at TV every week, it slowly hurt my standing within AEW.”

Fuego further discussed how Cody Rhodes’ absence impacted his standing inside AEW, raising concerns about his television appearances. This change in dynamics left Fuego feeling creatively dissatisfied, which contributed to his decision to leave the promotion.

In contrast, Rhodes’ comeback to WWE has been quite a success as he’s gone to onto clinch a remarkable Royal Rumble victory from the #30 spot. Despite his failed bid for Roman Reigns’ WWE Undisputed Universal Championship at WrestleMania 39, Rhodes maintained his momentum by winning the 2024 Royal Rumble.
