EC3’s career in WWE had been largely criticized by fans as the company has underutilized him on the main roster. He started Control Your Narrative after his WWE release but now he claims the promotion got bad press due to sabotage.

Released from WWE in 2020 after an unsuccessful main-roster stint, EC3 took control of his narrative by hosting ‘Free the Narrative’ pay-per-views. Emphasizing the desire for autonomy, in February 2022, EC3 and Adam ‘Braun Strowman’ Scherr unveiled Control Your Narrative, a new promotion inspired by the film ‘Fight Club.’

The announcement of Control Your Narrative faced ridicule from many vocal fans, who mocked it’s serious tone and the concept of talent booking their own storylines. CYN’s unconventional ‘rules,’ especially the notion of the fight being with oneself rather than the opponent, got a lot of flak.

While speaking on the Insight podcast, EC3 claimed that some of the negative press stemmed from acts of sabotage. He argued that when a new and unique concept poses a threat to the industry, there’s a tendency to destroy it before it grows, highlighting the challenges of introducing something different to the wrestling landscape.

”What is a professional wrestler’s number one job? This is an Al Snow question… To get attention, right? It’s about getting attention. And yeah, there’s good attention and there’s bad attention. It [Control Your Narrative] received bad attention but that attention was all based on frivolous lies and people trying to sabotage something before it even started.”

“Because, in theory, we did make some strong waves and provided something unique, where once you become a threat in the industry, you are sought to be destroyed before you grow.”

With over a year passing since its last event, Control Your Narrative faces an uncertain future. Though not officially confirmed, the outlook appears grim, particularly given Braun Strowman’s return to WWE in September 2022.
