Dominik Mysterio’s recent run as “Prison Dom” on WWE RAW has been a source of entertainment for fans, but many may not know the backstory behind the character’s creation.

While speaking on the Ringer Wrestling Show, Dominik revealed that the character began as a joke between himself and a writer. He had sent a meme of Michael Scott as “Prison Mike” from The Office, and a few days later, he received a text asking if he could do an interview about going to prison and doing hard time.

Dominik didn’t think much of it at the time and went along with the idea, which led to the creation of the popular “Prison Dom” character. The hilarious part? The video was shot against a white background, which hid the fact that there was a beautiful beach just behind him.

“Honestly, I think Prison Dom started as a joke. I was talking with one of the writers. I had texted him, he said thank you, I said thank you back, and I sent a picture of Michael Scott [Prison Mike] as a meme because in our texts I like to send GIFs. I was sending a GIF and he didn’t reply. Three or four days later, I get a text and it’s, ‘Hey, can you do this interview of you going to prison and doing this hard time.’ I didn’t think anything of it, to be honest, I was just like, I did get arrested and said I wouldn’t make it, but I was like, ‘I might be able to make it in there.’ We knocked out this video and somehow that video of me in the white tank top and white background took off. The funniest thing about the whole thing was right behind me was a beautiful beach.”

Despite the humor behind the character, Dominik’s recent WrestleMania 39 match against his father Rey Mysterio showed that he’s a serious competitor in the ring. While Rey emerged victorious in the bout, fans can expect to see more from Dominik in the future, as he remains a free man and a rising star in WWE.
