CM Punk is not active in AEW right now, but he is still with the company as far as we can tell. He is currently rehabbing a shoulder injury that needed surgery, and he might still be suspended, but he hasn’t been released as of this writing. That being said, CM Punk’s name is often one with a ton of rumor and innuendo attached.

A statement from the Wrestling Observer/Figure Four Online’s Ryan Frederick on Reddit got a lot of attention. He claimed CM Punk had to talk Tony Khan into letting him beat Hangman Page for the AEW World Title at Double or Nothing.

“Hangman was going to beat Punk at DoN until the worker’s rights promo, Punk got it changed and Tony literally sat on the porch of Punk’s house in LA booking out the summer with Hangman not anywhere close to being in the mix because Punk wasn’t going to work with him. No way they were going back to him at any point.”

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that this rumor is not correct. It was further stated that CM Punk was always supposed to beat Hangman Page for his title at Double or Nothing.

As far as rumor corrections, the story going around that Punk was originally going to lose to Adam Page at last year’s Double or Nothing but pressured Tony Khan to change the finish is not true. Punk was always winning that match. I had said before the match that I it was me, I’d have Page win the first meeting and Punk then win the title in Chicago, but Khan wanted the title on Punk months earlier and that wasn’t Punk’s doing or pressuring

CM Punk has not made his return to the ring since AEW All Out, when he won the AEW World Title from Jon Moxley. He then bashed the company and its EVPs during the media scrum, move that resulted in a locker room confrontation now famously known as “Brawl Out.” This is moment that nobody in the company looks back on fondly.

We will have to see what’s next for CM Punk. He very well could surprise us all and wrestle for AEW again. If anything, we know that Tony Khan was, at least, able to follow through with his plan for CM Punk to beat Adam “Hangman” Page for the biggest belt in the company.
