WWE is currently on the road to WrestleMania, and they are making rapid pace to the show of shows. Cody Rhodes’ big return at the Royal Rumble saw him pull down a massive win in the Alamodome. You never know what can happen as plans change in WWE, and it appears that Cody Rhodes might not have been WWE’s first choice.

The Rock was once thought to be a virtual lock for WrestleMania, as Ringside News exclusively reported. Things changed for Dwayne Johnson’s availability, and it was then said that the Great One wouldn’t be ready for a high caliber match by WrestleMania 39.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter noted that it is apparent that Cody Rhodes was not the first choice for Roman Reigns’ opponent. The Rock was in that spot for WrestleMania, and they “even contacted Steve Austin,” but that match ended up on the American Nightmare.

The entire storyline that brought Rhodes to WWE did almost have to result in him winning the title his father never could win. But that didn’t have to take place at Mania, just had to take place at some time. The fact WWE wanted Dwayne Johnson in the spot, and even contacted Steve Austin for the spot, tells you they weren’t married to the idea of Rhodes having to headline the show or win the title, at least from Reigns.

The Rock could still make an appearance at WrestleMania in a non-wrestling role. We will have to see if he can block out the time in his busy schedule. Returns for The Rock are few and far between nowadays, but a WrestleMania appearance for The People’s Champion is always a possibility.

Cody Rhodes could also shake things up in his own way. It’s hard to forget that Rhodes’ first declaration after his WWE return was to capture the title that eluded his father for his entire career. Roman Reigns currently holds that title, along with the Universal Championship, and they have a big WrestleMania match ahead of them.

This could be a banner WrestleMania year for WWE. Things are heating up in a big way, for sure. We will have full coverage of the road to WrestleMania right here at Ringside News.
