Chris Jericho issued an open challenge for his ROH World Championship during a previous episode of AEW Dynamite. The open challenge took place earlier this month and his opponent was revealed to be Colt Cabana. Some people found issues with this, but Tony Khan decided to justify choosing Cabana as Jericho’s opponent recently.

Colt Cabana’s music hit and the former ROH Tag Team Champion came out and answered Jericho’s challenge. Fans were very happy to see Boom Boom back, but he didn’t manage to win the match.

Fans wondered whether AEW did this to stick it to CM Punk or not. While speaking during the post-AEW Full Gear press conference, AEW President Tony Khan justified choosing Colt Cabana as Chris Jericho’s opponent.

As far as the match with Chris at Baltimore, I thought it made a lot of sense because we had the ROH Championship series and we talked about Chris Jericho facing so many great names in ROH. When you talk about so many people who held championships in ROH, we brought in Bandido, Dalton Case, and Tomohiro Ishii, who is a great former ROH World TV Champion. When we’ve been booking the shows, I’ve been using Colt Caban both as a coach and wrestler in ROH. So I looked at the ROH roster, Colt Cabana is a very logical challenger. He’s also been wrestling in the new ROH and was undefeated, so it made sense for him to face Chris.

AEW also ended up making the CM Punk situation worse with Colt Cabana’s appearance. Cabana’s appearance was also one-off deal. We’ll have to see if Cabana will return to AEW television in the future or not.
