At the start of 2022, WWE took a page from Tony Khan’s book and “opened the Forbidden Door” when it announced that Mickey James, who held the IMPACT Knockouts Championship at the time, would be appearing at the 2022 Royal Rumble event. The event saw WWE bring back many names from the past. Recently, news has emerged regarding the superstars WWE considered for the event.

According to a tweet from WrestleVotes in January 2022, WWE considered shock “Forbidden Door” entrant into the men’s 2022 Royal Rumble match. It didn’t take long enough for rumors to start flying amongst fans that WWE would bring back some top AEW talent, such as the likes of Jon Moxley, Chris Jericho or even Bryan Danielson.

However, speaking exclusively to GiveMeSport, WrestleVotes has now shed more light on the matter, shooting down rumors that anyone from AEW even being considered.

“It was never on the table for it to be anybody from AEW. That that
I know for sure. They agreed to have Mickie James wearing the IMPACT title, so I know the idea was ‘if we do it in the women’s, shouldn’t we do it in the men’s?’ “

WrestleVotes spoke further on how the talks regarding the “Forbidden Door” entrant for the Men’s Royal Rumble Match went. It seems the candidates for the “Forbidden Door” were nobodies in the eyes of Vince McMahon.

“From what I understand, a list of four or five guys was presented, and Vince didn’t like any of them, so that’s where it ended. Vince doesn’t know every single wrestler outside of the WWE, so when this list was presented, there was nothing that jumped out at him. I’m not even quite sure he recognised the four or five or six guys that they said, ‘we can probably do this.’”

It’s worthy to note that the decision from WWE to not take on someone from AEW for its “Forbidden Door” entrant into the Men’s Royal Rumble match took place under the Vince administration. Now that Triple H has taken over, it remains to be seen whether we can finally see someone from AEW make an appearance in the 2023 Royal Rumble.
