Former CEO Vince McMahon announced his shocking retirement on July 22nd. Despite perhaps one of the most prominent figures in all of wrestling no longer being in charge, SmackDown following the announcement went on as usual. One superstar who was backstage on that fateful day was The Brawling Brute’s Butch.

Speaking with Stephanie Chase from Digital Spy, Butch detailed what it was like being backstage during SmackDown on the day of McMahon’s retirement. According to him, the feeling backstage was “strangely normal.”

To be honest, up till now, it all feels strangely normal. Even the day when we were at SmackDown and we got notified that Vince had retired, obviously there’s that second of people looking around like, ‘Did you see that? Can you believe this has happened?’ But then after that, everyone’s so focused on the job that’s at hand it kind of feels strangely normal but exciting at the same time.

WWE has gone out of its way not to reference the former CEO. A report recently revealed that the company had removed all references to McMahon backstage, including renaming his office to just CEO. One has to wonder how far WWE will go to move past the Vince McMahon era.
