Stephanie McMahon got a temporary promotion this morning when she was named interim CEO of WWE. Her father, Vince McMahon, stepped down while an investigation into allegations that he paid an employee hush money to keep an affair quiet. Stephanie will remain the CEO until that investigation is complete.

The wild story has already had several huge twists and turns. Shortly after WWE announced that Vince McMahon was stepping down, a press release came out announcing that Vince would be appearing on tonight’s episode of SmackDown. McMahon is expected to appear as his “Mr. McMahon” character.

Alex Sherman of CNBC has reported that Stephanie McMahon’s elevation to CEO happened for a reason. Despite Steph recently taking a leave of absence from the company, there is a method to the madness. The idea is to signal that Vince McMahon has no intention of permanently stepping down.

“I’m also told that elevating Stephanie to CEO, after she just left to focus on family, is an optics play to signal Vince McMahon has no intention of stepping down.”

WWE higher-ups have been accused of attempting to bury Stephanie McMahon on her way out of the company by saying she was bad at her job. It would not be surprising to learn that after all of that, Stephanie was used as a pawn in a Vince McMahon power play. It could be all about optics.

It will be very interesting to see what happens tonight on SmackDown. Vince McMahon will be making an unprecedented appearance, and it’s anybody’s guess what he might say. If you’re unable to get to a TV, stick with Ringside News for live coverage of what could be a historic broadcast.
