Roman Reigns unified the WWE and Universal Championships by defeating Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 38. Since then, the Tribal Chief has not defended the championship on television. That could change in the coming weeks as the build to SummerSlam heats up.

WWE has already set up a feud between Roman Reigns and Matt Riddle. Riddle said he was coming to SmackDown tonight to find Reigns. He wants a shot at the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

It was rumored that Reigns might defend the title at Money in the Bank, but that isn’t happening. On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez when Reigns might make his first title defense. July 30th at SummerSlam is the target date for his first PPV defense, but there is a chance Roman will have a TV match before then.

“July 30th. He may actually wrestle on TV before that, but July 30th is his first pay-per-view championship match. He may do a television match before then. If he wrestles Riddle, it’ll be on TV. It won’t be on pay-per-view. At least that’s the plan right now.

The plan is still Orton for July 30th. I mean, obviously, they were building up the Riddle and Reigns match on Monday, so I’m presuming they’re going to do it, but I was told it would not be a pay-per-view match if they do it and it’s not 100% that they will, but you would think that they will, so that would lead me to believe it’d be a TV match.”

WWE has the setup in place for a match between Roman Reigns and Riddle. If it does happen, it won’t be at Money in the Bank. We may find out more on tonight’s episode of SmackDown.
