WWE has always had a history of trying to cross over to the mainstream by incorporating popular celebrities into their shows. WrestleMania was built on the backs of stars like Mr. T, Cindy Lauper, Aretha Franklin, and more. The strategy has always been a go to for WWE when they need to generate interest.

Some of the cameos even turn into long-standing relationships. Bad Bunny proved a hugely popular celebrity wrestler. The superstar musician was praised for his professionalism and dedication to learning the sport. Not every celebrity guest spot goes as well as Bad Bunny’s, but they always get huge attention.

The people at Fox, home of WWE SmackDown, have been pleased with the use of celebrities as well. WWE is creating a buzz and pleasing their network partners. Dave Meltzer wrote about the situation in this week’s Wrestling Observer Newsletter

“FOX has liked the idea of the surprise appearances which explains Jeff Jarrett and Eric Bischoff on the show for no obvious reason this past week. Outside talent is being talked with for cameos both in the Rumble and for surprises on television. The idea is to try and create buzz with the idea of who unannounced may show up on television each week”

Johnny Knoxville is the latest celebrity to get involved with WWE. The Jackass star recently threw Sammy Zayn over the top rope on SmackDown. That gesture qualified Knoxville to compete in this year’s men’s Royal Rumble match.

We’ll see what other big surprises WWE has between now and WrestleMania. This is the biggest time of year for Vince McMahon’s organization. They will surely try to make another splash to get maximum eyeballs on the grandest stage of them all.
