Roman Reigns returns to SmackDown tonight after some time off, and the Universal Champion will address the recent actions of Brock Lesnar. It’s unclear if Brock will be on the show but we’re eager to see more of the new coverall-wearing, funny farmer with a mean streak. Unfortunately, this is one of those weeks where WWE hasn’t announced any matches or segments at the time of writing, but we assume we’ll see the likes of Sami Zayn, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Charlotte Flair.
And that’s the (sparse) preview for tonight’s SmackDown. Our live coverage will begin from 8PM right here. Let us know if you’re excited about any of it and remember to hit the refresh link below and enjoy the show!
This week’s show opens with a look back at last week’s SmackDown, where Sami Zayn was brought out in a wheelchair before being confronted by Paul Heyman, and then attacked by Brock Lesnar. We see Paul Heyman standing outside the arena, awaiting the arrival of the Universal Champion, Roman Reigns.
We go live to the arena in Chicago and Toni Storm is already in the ring. She’s joined by her partner, Sasha Banks, and their opponents thereafter.
The tag match begins with Toni and Shotzi and they lock-up. Storm takes her down with a side headlock but Shotzi breaks free. Toni shoots her off and hits a big boot, then tags Sasha Banks. They look for a double team but Shotzi tags Flair and she slowly gets in the ring to lock-up with Banks. Sasha avoids Flair and connects with a hurricanrana. Sasha takes a headlock and tags Storm but Flair clocks her, then kicks Banks off the apron. Shotzi tags in and sends Storm out as well.
Back live and Banks takes Shotzi down with a back elbow. Storm tags in and forearms Shotzi in the corner, then tags Banks so she can do the same. Sasha blocks a kick, knees Shotzi, and knock Flair off the apron. Shotzi attacks Banks and tags Flair, who takes her out of the ring and runs her into the barricade. Back inside, Charlotte holds Banks down with a submission but the fans rally her.
Banks hits the ropes but gets caught with a backbreaker. Shotzi and Storm tag in and Toni lands two inverted atomic drops and a flying forearm. Storm stomps Toni down in the corner but Flair tags in and hits her with an exploder. Storm rolls out of the ring and Flair poses as we head to the break.
Sasha Banks tags in and clocks Charlotte with a knee, knocks Shotzi off the apron, then looks for the Bank Statement but Flair rolls her off. Sasha counters a tilt-a-whirl with a crossbody, then connects with double knees in the corner. Banks and Flair trade blows to the cheers and boos, then Banks rolls her up for a two-count. Banks hits a wheelbarrow facebuster.
Storm tags herself in as Charlotte tosses Sasha out of the ring. Storm hits a crossbody off the top for a near-fall, then looks for her finish but Charlotte slings her into the turnbuckles. Flair scales the ropes and looks for a moonsault but Toni gets her knees up to block it. Storm lifts Charlotte and rolls her up to score the pinfall and the win!
Xavier Woods is backstage on his throne with a group around him chanting his name. The Uso’s appear and make fun of him but Woods says he and Kofi could beat them for the tag titles. The Uso’s say they’ll beat them twice; tonight and at Day 1.
Natalya is interviewed backstage but she interrupts the question instantly to say she has more matches in WWE than any woman in history. She says Xia Li had the audacity to attack her last week but that doesn’t fly on SmackDown. Xia is a nobody and she’s the best of all time.
We see a replay of RAW and what happened with Bobby Lashley, Seth Rollins, Big E, and Kevin Owens. The four of them will meet on January 1st at the Day 1 PPV for the WWE Championship.
Back live and the Vikings are working together to isolate Jinder. Mahal connects with a knee against Erik and tags Shanky for a big boot. Shanky backs him into the corner and lands some back elbows, then chops him in the chest and shoulder tackles him. Jinder tags back in and continues the offense until Ivar gets the tag and runs over him.
Ivar tries to knock Shanky off the apron to no avail, then Jinder grabs him from behind. Ivar cartwheels past Jinder and drops him, then tags Erik who body slams him onto Jinder. Shanky tags in but gets knocked down in the corner and Ivar lands a hip attack. Erik intercepts Mahal and sends him out of the ring, then Ivar goes up top for a splash and the pinfall.
We see a replay of last Friday night when Drew McIntyre was told he couldn’t take his sword to the ring, she he stabbed Adam Pearce’s desk. Happy Corbin and Madcap Moss have the desk and the sword and they’re coming to the ring.
Paul Heyman is still waiting outside and a black SUV pulls-up. Heyman is excited but out steps Brock Lesnar. Heyman says he was expecting someone else and Brock asks if it was Roman. Heyman doesn’t speak so Brock wishes him good luck and walks off.
Happy Corbin and Madcap Moss come to the ring where the desk with the sword is sitting. Corbin says the desk is an expensive piece of furniture that doubles as a hat rack and Moss puts his hat on the sword. Moss then tells some of his terrible jokes and the fans start chanting “CM Punk”. Corbin says he loves his razor-sharp wit and so he gifts the sword to Moss.
Madcap tries to pull the sword out of the desk but he can’t. Corbin then tries and he can’t either. Drew McIntyre finally comes out and makes his way to the ring where the unfunny duo are still struggling with the sword. Drew asks if they’re gaving performance issues, then attacks them both. McIntyre walks over to the desk and removes the sword with ease. Moss and Corbin flee as Corbin poses with Angela.
Sami Zayn interrupts Sonya Deville and Adam Pearce. He says he’s here to wish them a Merry Christmas because he believes in the spirit of Christmas. He complains about Brock Lesnar interfereing with him lately and says he should have another opportunity. Pearce offers him a 12 Days of Christmas 12 Man Battle Royale, in which he can get a shot at the Intercontinental Championship.
Sheamus and Ridge Holland make their entrance. Cesaro comes out next but he gets attacked before the match can get underway.
Cesaro wants the match to go ahead so the referee rings the bell. Holland rushes him into the corner and lands repeated knees, then clubs him in the gut. Holland picks him up for a gutbuster, then bends him over his knee. Cesaro fights back and knocks Ridge out of the ring, then connects with a running uppercut against the barricade. Cesaro gets Ridge back inside but Sheamus distracts him, allowing Holland to club his ribs again. Holland hits a powerslam for the win.
After the match Holland attacks Cesaro again, knocking him out of the ring so he can Sheamus can pose.
Naomi comes to the ring and she says every year she makes a Christmas list. And this year her only wish was to face Sonya Deville, one-on-one. She knows Sonya is back there listening and tells her to come out here and face her. Sonya comes out and calls her unprofessional. She says she’s tried telling her that, when she’s wearing her suit, she can’t touch her.
Deville says she knows someone who is desperate to fight Naomi; Shayna Baszler. Naomi asks her to get in the ring and fight. Deville gets in the ring and says she’d be happy to beat her up but Shayna attacks Naomi from behind. Baszler attacks her leg and beats her, then Sonya tells the referee to ring the bell.
The bell rings and Sonya grabs a heel hook. Naomi fights it for a minute, then rolls her up for a win.
Madcap Moss and Happy Corbin are hiding backstage and an interviewer asks them why they’re hiding. Corbin says he’s happy because he’s rich and not a normal person. Corbin says they’re going to be laughing all through New Year’s because Drew McIntyre will be facing Moss at Day 1. Moss looks surprised and daunted.
Kofi starts the match against Jey Uso. Jey shoves Kofi into the ropes where Jimmy hits a blind kick to the back. Jimmy tags in and beats Kofi down in the corner. Jey and Jimmy keep making quick tags but Kofi catches Jimmy with S.O.S and looks to tag Woods. Jey causes a distraction and the referee doesn’t see the tag so he forces him back out, then The Uso’s double team Kofi.
Woods fights back against both Uso’s and hits a nice rolling clothesline to Jey. Woods coutners Jimmy with a tilt-a-whirl Russian leg sweep, clotheslines him to the outside, then dives through the ropes with a dropkick. Woods gets him back in the ring and connects with a leg drop for a two-count. Kofi tags in and Woods dives at Jey but gets sent into the barricade.
Kofi attempts the S.O.S but gets shrugged off by Jimmy, then looks for Trouble In Paradise but gets caught with a superkick. Jey tagged in but the referee missed it and Woods runs over to shove him off the top rope to the floor. Meanwhile Kingston catches Jimmy with Trouble In Paradise and the New Day score the pinfall.
Paul Heyman is still waiting outside and Roman Reigns finally arrives at the arena. Heyman is standing with the title and Roman says “let’s go out to my ring”.
Roman Reigns and Paul Heyman make their way to the ring. Reigns takes the microphone and tells Chicago to acknowledge him. Roman says he’s said it before and he thought he’d made it clear; he doesn’t like it when his cousins lose. Roman asks Jey if he knows that and he nods. Roman says they’re still family and they can get through anything.
Roman turns and points at Heyman, “but you, you’re not my blood.” Heyman should know better than anyone that he can’t have people disrespecting him. So he’s going to ask some questions he’s asked before; “can I trust you wiseman?” Roman says he took a week off but he knows everything that goes on and Heyman looked a little shady to him. He asks if Heyman knew Brock was coming back at SummerSlam? If he’d be at MSG? If his suspension was going to be lifted? And, most importantly, is he a special council or an advocate?
Heyman looks scared and lost for words and he requests the microphone but Roman won’t give it to him. Heyman gets one from the announcer and goes to speak but Roman asks him to acknowledge him with the truth, “why are you protecting Brock Lesnar from me?” Heyman laughs and says “my tribal chief, I’m not protecting Brock Lesnar from you, I’m protecting you from Brock Lesnar.”
Reigns is not happy. Roman hugs Heyman and says “I love you wiseman, and I thank you for your honesty. And I thank you for forty years of service to my family. And you’re fired.” Heyman looks shocked and Roman drops him with a Superman punch that the fans loved. Reigns requests two chairs and he wants a con-chair-to but Lesnar’s music hits and he runs down to the ring and bowls over Jimmy and Jey. Brock hits both with F5’s on the floor, then slides into the ring. Roman hits Brock with the chair a few times but Lesnar scoops him up and hits an F5. The fans cheer and Lesnar hits a second F5 to end the show.
