WWE has a lot of gimmick matches and the Elimination Chamber is a huge match that has its own pay-per-view. There was a time when the company almost went with another idea completely.

During a recent episode of Talk Is Jericho, Chris Jericho revealed that THE Elimination Chamber match was initially supposed to be WarGames. Vince McMahon nixed that idea because he thought WarGames was “too WCW.”

“They originally, Elimination Chamber was originally going to be WarGames, but Vince didn’t want to do WarGames because he said it was too WCW. So then, we created our own. Hunter always wanted to do WarGames and then he brings it to NXT.”

It’s hard to imagine WWE without its yearly Elimination Chamber event, but that was almost the case. Due to Vince McMahon’s unwillingness to use WCW properties that unique match concept was devised.

NXT ended up using the WarGames concept for years, but we also have to wonder what will come of that yearly event now that NXT 2.0 is upon us. It is possible that Vince McMahon will nix that idea again, because he doesn’t want people associating WWE with WCW’s defunct product.
