The holiday season is in full swing, and while Christmas has come and gone, families around the United States are being treated to a number of live events as part of the live tour. The most recent one for SmackDown was in Chicago- and former WWE Champion AJ Styles was nowhere to be found, despite being advertised as facing “The New” Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship on the show.
William Green of PWInsider was at the show and revealed that Styles was not at the event as he was suffering from the flu. This was revealed by The Miz and Shane McMahon during Miz TV, which opened the show.
In response to this, WWE had Mustafa Ali come out and cut a promo that led to a match with The Miz with the stipulation being that the winner would face Bryan. Bryan, of course, would go on to interrupt the match, which led to WWE holding a triple threat match for the WWE Championship, which Bryan won.
This match kicked off the show, and Styles was not seen throughout the remainder of the event. Additionally, Styles has not been active on Twitter or Instagram- likely a bi-product of his illness. No date has been given for Styles’ return to in-ring competition, though the expectation with the flu is that Styles will, at most, be out a few days.
